An Ghaeilge in Eaglais na hÉireann – The Irish Language in the Church of Ireland

Risteárd Giltrap

Scríobh Risteárd Giltrap le go mbeadh tuiscint úrnua ag daoine ar

thraidisiún na Gaeilge agus tábhacht na Gaeilge i bhforbairt Eaglais na
hÉireann agus ár náisiúin. Ba thráthúil an rud é nuair a foilsíodh a leabhar
den chéad uair sa bhliain 1990 agus tá tábhacht leis fós sa lá atá inniu ann.
Is cuntas inrochtana é ar an tslí inár ghlac an–chuid Protastúnach páirt sa
ghluaiseacht tosaigh a bunaíodh chun ár dteanga a shábháil.
“Is fiú go mbeadh rochtain ag an bpobal is leithne agus is féidir ar
thaighde cáiréiseach Giltrap – go háirithe mar gheall ar an stair, a
bhíodh bríomhar anois is arís, a bhaineann le Cumann Gaelach na
hEaglaise – agus má mheallann an insint as Béarla léitheoirí tá seans
go n–aontóidh siad in am is i dtráth le roinnt d’ábhair dhíograise agus
imní an údair as Gaeilge”.
– An tEaspag Michael Burrows, Deoise Chaisil, Fhearna agus Osraí
agus Pátrún Chumann Gaelach na hEaglaise.

Risteárd Giltrap wrote to provide a fresh understanding of the Irish
language tradition and its importance in the evolution of the Church of
Ireland and our nation. His book was timely when it was first published in
1990 and it is still relevant now.
It is an accessible account of how many Protestants took part in the original
movement to save our language.
“His careful research – not least concerning the at times colourful
history of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise – deserves as wide an
audience as possible, and if readers are drawn into the narrative as
Béarla they may in due course come to share some of the author’s
passions and concerns as Gaeilge”.
– Bishop Michael Burrows, Diocese of Cashel, Ferns and Ossory
and Patron of Cumann Gaelach na hEaglaise.
